Cuenca's Climate at a Glance
Cuenca sits at 2,530 meters (8,300 feet) above sea level in the Andean highlands of southern Ecuador. At this altitude, the city has what locals call an eternal spring climate — temperatures rarely exceed 22°C (72°F) during the day or drop below 7°C (45°F) at night, and this remains relatively consistent year-round.
Ecuador straddles the equator, so there are no traditional four seasons. Instead, Cuenca has a dry season (roughly June–September) and a rainy season (October–May, with the heaviest rain in February–March). Even during the rainy season, mornings are often sunny and rain typically falls in the afternoon.
Best Time Overall: June to August
The dry season months — particularly June, July and August — offer the most consistently clear skies, the best conditions for hiking in Cajas National Park, and long sunny days for exploring the historic center. These are also the most popular months for tourism, so expect higher hotel occupancy. Book ahead.
Month-by-Month Breakdown
January
Post-holiday quiet period. The city is relaxed and accommodation is easy to find. Rain is frequent but manageable. Good for budget travelers. The city center has a pleasant, unhurried atmosphere without the holiday crowds.
February & March
The wettest months. Rainy afternoons are frequent and the páramo around Cajas can be extremely misty. That said, the city is quiet and prices are low. Carnival (Carnaval) falls in February/March — a major celebration in Cuenca, especially the traditional water fights. One of the most lively times to visit if you don't mind getting wet (intentionally).
April
Semana Santa (Holy Week) is Cuenca's most important religious festival. Elaborate processions fill the streets, particularly the Via Crucis (Stations of the Cross) on Good Friday. The city is busy with domestic tourists during this week — book well in advance if visiting during Easter. Weather begins to improve toward the end of the month.
May
Transition month — rain tapers off and the city becomes greener and more lush. Not as busy as the dry season peak. A good shoulder-season option with reasonable weather and prices.
June, July & August — Peak Season
The best weather of the year. Clear skies, warm days (18–22°C), cool evenings. June 24 is the Corpus Christi festival — one of Cuenca's most distinctive celebrations, with traditional sweets, ferris wheels and fireworks in the plazas. July and August are the peak months for international visitors. Book hotels and tours in advance.
September & October
Weather begins to turn, with rain returning in October. September can still be quite good — a quieter alternative to the high-season months with similar weather. November 3–4 is Cuenca's Independence Day, celebrated with parades, music and the city at its most festive.
November & December
November 3 (Independence Day) is one of the best times to visit for a cultural experience. December brings Christmas markets, elaborate Pase del Niño processions (the city's most important Christmas tradition, held December 24) and festive atmosphere throughout the historic center. Weather is rainy but the city is magical. Accommodation fills up for the holiday period — book early.
Altitude and Health
Cuenca's elevation of 2,530m can cause altitude sickness (soroche) in visitors arriving from sea level. Common symptoms include headache, fatigue and mild nausea, usually appearing in the first 24–48 hours. To minimize the effect: rest on arrival, drink plenty of water, avoid heavy meals and alcohol on your first day, and consider altitude medication if you're sensitive. Most visitors feel fine after a day or two.
What to Pack
- Light layers — mornings and evenings are cool even in the dry season
- A waterproof jacket at all times of year
- Sun protection — UV is intense at altitude
- Comfortable walking shoes for the cobblestone streets
